Columbusnhi reviews

Loose your other version and get remastered.. Waiting for Columbus [Live] [Original recording reissued] [Original recording remastered]

If you can't tell the diference this makes then get an up to date CD player. Wow, the best live album has a new standard. Man O Man get you some cuz it's a slap up grin and goes good with everything.

This monster gets a go through Oz and comes out shinny, bigger and mo edge. I like it low and LOUD and I think it likes me too.

Thanks for this recording remastered a treasure that brings up the spirit.
Cough up the coin now, it's nuthing but what you want anyhow.

An Essential Album From The Classic Lineup. There are only a handful of essential live albums. A few that immediately come to mind are the Who's "Live at Leeds," the Stones' "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" and the Allman Brothers'"At the Fillmore East." Included on that elite list is Little Feat's "Waiting for Columbus."

What you hear on this expanded version of their 1978 release is a band at their peak. Lowell George's incendiary slide guitar playing, Bill Payne's rollicking keyboards, the funk of the Tower of Power horn section and the band's backlog of material make for a stunning live performance. Not only are "Don't Bogart That Joint" and "A Apolitcal Blues" restored to this reissue (deleted from the original vinyl release to accommodate a single CD), but a whopping ten outtakes are included, adding almost a full hour of music!

Of the outtakes on disc-2, tracks 6-10 were mixed for the original album, but not used. Tracks 13-15 first appeared on the odds and ends album "Hoy-Hoy!" According to the liner notes, tracks 11 and 12 apparently were never considered for use on either the original album or "Hoy-Hoy!" All outtakes were taken from the same series of concerts (The Rainbow Theatre in London and Lisner Auditorium in Washington, DC) as the songs on the original album.

This is the last Little Feat album which had the full involvement of Lowell George. [George died before the completion of the disappointing follow-up studio album "Down on the Farm."] While a revamped Little Feat has been releasing albums for the past two decades, this is a must-have album from their classic lineup. ESSENTIAL

Fantastic. I actually was at this show so its a favorite of mine.. but even if you weren't there, this is a piece of southern rock history, a great live show, all energy, all guitar.....

"I'm Temporarily Qualmless And Sinking.". "Waiting For Columbus" is one of the best live albums ever recorded, and this two disc packaging improves dramatically on what was already a classic. The album was recorded over several nights at the Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University in Washington, DC and at the Rainbow Theatre in London during August 1977. Tragically, Little Feat's dynamic frontman, Lowell George, would play his last concert at Lisner less than two years later.

This two CD set restores some great songs to the earlier abridged release, notably "Cold, Cold, Cold," "Rock and Roll Doctor," and "Teenage Nervous Breakdown." This album is one of the few live albums that stands the test of time, competing favorably with other greats like "Alchemy" from Dire Straits for my favorite live album of all time. For me the standouts here are "Fat Man in the Bathtub," "Mercenary Territory," Spanish Moon," "Dixie Chicken," and "Rocket in my Pocket." The live version of "Feats Don't Fail Me Now," is, like several other songs on the set, a poster child for improvisation, a staple of the live Little Feat experience. During these concerts the Tower of Power horn section contributed constructively to the overall sound of the live band, making an already great listening experience utterly sublime.

I normally don't buy "remastered" albums, but here I wholly endorse spending the money: the sound quality of this release is excellent, and the added material is a gift to Little Feat loyalists like myself.

I could not recommend any recording more highly.

This Classic Just Got Better. Waiting For Columbus in its original format ranks as an all time great Live CD. With the addition of ten new tracks(seven which were never released), this CD soars into the stratosphere in its level of greatness.

What can I say, all the new tracks are noteworthy particularly the versions of Rock N Roll Doctor and On Your Way Down. Lowell George can sure sing the blues like no other white man. And Billy Payne's piano is just superb. The many solos of the other band members are outstanding particularly Ritchie Haywards drums on Day or Night and Gradneys Bass on Spanish Moon and A Day At The Dog Races.

Little Feat were sure ahead of their time with all their creative tones. Its a shame that this CD does not get more notoriety in more mainstream circles. Possibly because many of the songs exceed the five minute mark. However, its quality that counts here and this 2 disc set is clearly a Desert Island Disc. I sincerely would recommend this recording to almost anyone as Little Feat's musical influence touches on many forms of popular music both past and present.
